What should you wear for your tech interview?

You’ve been waiting so long, and you finally got the call.  You are scheduled to go in for your interview and you have nothing to wear.  So you find yourself roaming the mall trying to decide on the perfect outfit, but there is too much to choose from and you can’t decide.  Should you pick the fancy suit and tie, or should you lean towards business casual?  You will be judged within seconds of meeting your potential new boss, so you want it to be perfect.  How do you decide?  Start by asking your friends and colleagues.  Check out this board on Pinterest to get some ideas on what to wear to your tech interview.

It’s about competence, confidence, and comfort.

“Only wear something that will make you feel like a rock star,” according to Raquel from the Seattle Times.  On interview day, choose the outfit that helps you feel at ease.  You should wear what makes you feel most comfortable and confident.  Also check out Instagram for pictures of great outfits.

Here’s a good article from IT world (with pictures) and how to decide on the best outfit.  According to  Monster.com career advice:  “If you’re applying for a technical position, you won’t need a suit,” says Carole Martin, a former Monster contributor and author of Boost Your Interview IQ. “A collared shirt and khakis or slacks would work. Same goes for women — sweater or blouse and slacks or a skirt.” But upgrade your attire if you’re interviewing for a higher-level job. “You dress in the best clothes you have,” says David Perry, managing director for Ottawa, Canada-based high tech recruiting firm Perry-Martel International and author of Career Guide for the High-Tech Professional. “No exceptions.”

No matter which outfit you ultimately choose, you should be focused on what you can contribute to them as a person.  The outfit should reflect some personality and show that you are ready, willing, and able to take on your new endeavor.
