CyberSecurity Technical Writer


The CyberSecurity Technical Writer is responsible for producing high-quality documentation that contributes to, and supports, the MassDOT IT Information Security team (InfoSec). 

The role reports to the InfoSec Team Lead.  The role contributes to specific initiatives and projects that the InfoSec team undertakes.  When assigned to a project requiring documentation deliverables the role reports to the project manager for the duration of the project.

Documentation will be created in support of InfoSec’s Governance, Risk and Compliance (GRC) program and InfoSec/IT operations.  Deliverables will follow established formatting when available; if none are available then one will be created and submitted for approval and acceptance by DOT. Deliverables will be in the form of policies, procedures, standards, standard operating procedures (SOP), work instructions and/or process documents and any documentation required as part of the InfoSec program.

Examples of document deliverables:

  • Existing operational processes and procedures used by InfoSec today
  • New operational processes and procedures for InfoSec
  • Charters
  • Executive reporting and communications
  • Enterprise policies and standards
  • Governance documentation

The main responsibilities and routine tasks of the CyberSecurity Technical Writer are to:

  • Establish overarching CyberSecurity documentation requirements
  • Define and document requirements for specific deliverables
  • Produce documentation in a timely manner as directed by the Team Lead and Project Manager
  • Ensure documentation is clear, concise, comprehensive, and complete
  • Establish a library framework for CyberSecurity documentation on a MassDOT collaborative workspace.


  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Computer Science Systems, Communications, or a related field.
  • 7+ years of work experience in a technical writer role within an IT or Engineering organization
  • Stable, contiguous work history with mainly longer contracts
  • Knowledge of CyberSecurity principles
  • Advanced Microsoft Word knowledge in the practical use of all functions
  • Advanced Visio/Publisher knowledge in practical use of all functions
  • Proficiency with image-capture software such as SnagIt, Snip and Sketch
  • Experience using SharePoint and Office 365 in everyday work
  • Experience using Go-To meeting and Microsoft Teams in everyday work
  • Experience with ServiceNow Knowledge Base module
  • Experience with policy creation.
  • Knowledge of ITIL a plus
